»I am not sure whether our approach to films is changed because we are sisters. Perhaps for this film because we were able to film the teenagers without making things erotic.«
Delphine Coulin

»We wouldn’t be like our parents.«
»16 years age difference, that’s perfect.«
»There wouldn’t be any generation conflict.«

Dialogue from 17 Filles

Camille, Julia, Florence and their girlfriends attend the grammar school in Lorient, a somewhat bleak city in Brittany. They find their environment narrow-minded, and don’t expect any favours from their parents or from the school. On the contrary – they are disappointed and feel they are being pushed around because nobody is taking responsibility for their education. They themselves want to do things differently, which is why they take an unusual decision; against all expectations and the incomprehension of parents and teachers and the young fathers, 17 of them become pregnant at the same time.

Sisters DELPHINE and MURIEL COULIN come from Hennebont in Brittany. After going to the Louis-Lumière film school in Noisy-le-Grand, Muriel made numerous documentaries of her own, and worked for filmmakers such as Louis Malle, Aki Kaurismäki and Krzysztof Kieślowski. Delphine produced documentations for Arte and wrote novels. Together they made five short feature films until now. For Il faut imaginer Sysiphe heureux they won the Best Drama Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival and in 2001 the Prix de la Critique Française for Souffle. A true story in the USA inspired them to make 17 Filles, their first feature film together.
