Focus: ABOUT GERMANY

The Cologne edition of IWFF always places the spotlight on a particular country or region. Having examined the cinematographies of various countries in past years, now seems to be the time to look inwards: ABOUT GERMANY is the focus of the Festival in 2018, which presents itself as an open artistic and political plea for diversity beyond national debates.

Identity and inclusivity, exclusion and empowerment are key terms in the programme. If members of so-called minority groups are presented in the film industry, it’s more likely they are the protagonists* and subjects of cultural products than those determining the action and setting their own agenda. These forms of exclusion, hierarchies and power structures are rarely discussed by the cultural sector itself.

For the ABOUT GERMANY section the Festival invites various actors, initiatives and projects to consider these structural forms of racism and suggest alternative approaches. Each part of this multi-format programme featuring contemporary and historical films and videos, discussions, lectures, a scenic reading and a video workshop has its own creative mind. Over ten filmmakers, curators, NGOs and institutions for whom the diversity of voices in this country is a matter of fundamental importance are taking part in the programme.
