First Comes Love

USA 1991, 22' | Director, Realization Su Friedrich | Distribution Outcast Films

First Comes Love consists of perfectly choreographed scenes showing four marriage ceremonies, accompanied by a medley of popular love songs. Everything seems perfect – until the couple reaches the altar …

Su Friedrich poses the question here of differing values regarding heterosexual and homosexual marriage. Her film Cool Hands, Warm Heart can also be seen in the programme Performing bodies: feminist avant-garde of the 60s and 70s at this year's Dortmund | Cologne IFFF.

Su Friedrich has been a seminal figure of Queer Cinema since the late 70s. Her films combine narrative, documentary and experimental elements and often deal with the role of women, family and homosexuality in American society. Friedrich is Professor for Film and Video Production at the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts at Princeton University.
