Scottish publisher John Murray made the observation in 1821 that the spokes of a wheel when they move around behind a vertical lattice fence appear to be bent. The fence phenomenon is a stroboscope effect, its discovery contributing to the invention of film, which in turn inspired the director to make this film.
Fences is a hand-made, abstract film which, by examining the structures of wheel and fence, generates optical illusions.

José Vonk lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied Graphic Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where she specialised in animation and illustration. After graduating in 1977, she founded, together with Helga Kos and Lidewij Frijlink, the company De Dames, which she has run alone since the end of the 1980s. She has been teaching at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie since 1986. Apart from her teaching work and commissions for newspapers and television, in 1997 she began producing her own experimental films, which tackle the subject of perception.
