The great actress Türkan Şorayis is revered as the Sultana of Turkish cinema. In 1972, in the feature film Dönüş, she worked as director for the first time as well as taking the lead role. She was one of the first artists in the history of Turkish cinema to deal with the topic of guest workers from a woman’s perspective.

Türkan Şoray plays in Dönüş a woman whose husband decides to go to Germany for work. Left to her own devices, she fights off the advances of a powerful landowner. She learns to read and write with the village teacher so that she can read the letters her husband sends. But when one day he returns, he has completely alienated himself from life in the home village.

Türkan Şoray, born 1945 in Istanbul, is one of the most famous actresses in Turkey. She was just 15 years old when director Türker I ̇nanog ̆lu helped her get her first part in the film Köyde Bir Kiz Sevdim (I Loved a Girl in the Village). Her big breakthrough as an actress came in 1964 with her role as Nermin in Aci Hayat (Bitter Life) for which she was awarded Best Female Lead at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in 1964. In a period of over 45 years, Ms Şoray has acted in over 200 films and received numerous prizes and awards. In addition to her career as an actress, she also put in directorial work – including Dönüs ̧. Since 2010, Türkan Şoray has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
