Art Must Be Beautiful Artist Must Be Beautiful

Denmark 1975, 14' | Director, DoP, Sound, Cast, Production Marina Abramovic

Marina Abramovic is brushing and combing her hair. To the rhythm of her actions she repeats calmly and matter of factly: "Art must be beautiful, artist must be beautiful". The intensity and speed slowly increase until the everyday hair-care utensils are transformed into instruments of pain. This video recording is the annotated version of a one-hour performance at the Charlottenburg Art Festival in Copenhagen.

Marina  Abramovic studied art in Belgrade. Her performances, in which she made her body the source of the work of art and often pushed herself to the limits of physical endurance, were presented all over the world. From 1975 she lived in Amsterdam and worked until 1988 with her partner Ulay. In 1997 Abramovi? was awarded the Golden Lion of the Biennale in Venedig for her video performance installation Balkan Baroque. She taught at the Académie des Beaux-Arts Paris and at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. Since 2005 she has lived in New York, where she founded the Independent Performance Group (IPG).
