Brief Autobiography

There is no word in Rumanian for "performance art" as such. The term that exists for "performance" is only used in connection with the more traditional branches of drama and dance etc. In Brief Autobiography, then, Merilena Preda Sânc takes an ironic look at this lexical gap, based on her life as a performance artist and posing the question: "What is performance?"

The recording of a live performance, the film came about in collaborator with Martha Wilson from the Franklin Furnace Foundation in New York.

Marilena Preda Sânc graduated from the Bucharest State Academy of Arts in 1980, completing a doctorate there in 2002. Following initial preoccupation with painting, drawing, sculpture and visual concrete poetry, she began in 1993 to focus on video performance and installation. She has since published many works on this subject in her native country.
