The women's multi-layered and imaginative analyses of their societies from within offer an intriguing look at areas of conflict and levels of contradiction in the Arab world. What stories do the Arab film-makers have to tell and what are the female characters like?

Nowadays, we are treated to a wealth of information about the current global crises — poverty, environmental destruction and all those finance markets supposedly teetering on the edge of the abyss. Yet the time for far-reaching political change is long overdue. After all, despite the dramatic consequences of a consumerist lifestyle, the goal of non-stop growth continues to be propagated. Natural resources are being wasted as though there were no tomorrow, while the international finance markets seem to operate free of any legal or ethical restraints. Is the public sector today ruled by economic interests and nothing else?

Country Focus: Around the Balkans
With the collapse of socialism as we knew it and the formation of new political systems and countries, the last 20 years have witnessed a dramatic transformation for many states in South-East Europe. The aftermath of the traumatic war in the former Yugoslavia had a significant effect across Europe and it is hardly surprising that it should be now the theme of many films from that area. For film-making in the Balkans has become more than a matter of culture. It is now seen as a profound way of expressing a new identity and acting as a forum for reflection on political events.
In this year's Country Focus, the Dortmund | Cologne International Women's Film Festival provided women film-makers from that part of the world with a broader platform and gave viewers a chance to come into dialogue with the directors themselves.
